What Are the Issues?
"I want to be very clear about one thing. I like and respect Mayor Kitty Piercy as a person. But I do not feel that she is taking the positive steps that Eugene needs. I share many of her stated policies. As a member of the founding Sustainability Committee of the US Council of Mayors, I agree with the concept of sustainability that she has also embraced. I applauded in 2004 when she ran to become the 'Mayor for ALL Eugene.' Her campaign promise gave me hope for continued healing in a very divisive and contentious City Council environment. I looked forward to a positive, cooperative approach that would be necessary to answer some very difficult questions:
- Can Eugene support law enforcement professionals in a way that makes our neighborhoods and schools truly safe?
- Can we change a local business environment where the government helps rather than hinders the creation of family wage jobs?
- Can we finally find the courage to prioritize our spending and fix the potholes on our streets?

- Can we work with our intergovernmental partners and build the system of roads that we all need in our community?
- Can we build a consensus to finally revitalize our downtown area?
- Can we create parks where they are needed — and where the voters intended to put them?
- Can we plan for moderate growth in a way that renews and sustain our community's environmental AND economic health?
"I believe that the past 3 years of inaction has provided a very troubling answer to each of these questions:
'No, Eugene, we can't.' The right answer, the necessary
answer for the future of our community, is a different one:
"Yes, Eugene, we CAN!"
